Practice: Somatic Boundaries

”Skin is our outermost layer, covering our body in its entirety and defining us as individuals by separating us from that which is not us.
Through our skin, we touch and are touched by the other outer world. This outer boundary is our first line of defense and bonding. It sets our general tone of openness and closedness to being in the world—through our skin we are both invaded and protected, and we receive and make contact with others.”

-Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen

Somatic boundaries start with becoming aware of the outermost layer that defines you as an individual.
This outermost layer is also what offers a container within which you can track your own inner experience.

Clear boundaries comes from the awareness of the container, awareness of what is inner and what is outer, and the felt sense language of body and gestures and words.

This is a simple introductory practice that, when done repeatedly over time, strengthen your capacity to allow the natural response of 'yes' and 'no' to happen in the moment it is needed.

Below you find both a video version and an audio only version of the practice.

After care ...

If you have the time and space take some time to journal

  • What is the felt sense, inner experience, of wanting something/Yes?

  • What is the felt sense, inner experience, of not wanting/No?

  • What else did you notice?
